How Trash Works in Rural Central Virginia
Most of Central Virginia operates on a self-haul model. Counties maintain a network of convenience centers — some with a dozen sites, some with just one — and residents are responsible for bringing their own trash. Recycling programs vary: some counties offer free single-stream recycling at every site; others provide more limited drop-off options.
What almost none of these counties offer is curbside pickup. That’s handled by private haulers operating throughout the region. For full-time residents with reliable vehicles and reasonably nearby convenience centers, self-haul works well. For rental property owners, new residents, elderly or disabled residents, or anyone who would rather not manage the logistics themselves, private service is the practical answer.
Household hazardous waste — paints, chemicals, pesticides, batteries — requires a separate disposal route in every county. Most counties run annual or twice-yearly collection events. We track these programs so you don’t have to.
