Cumberland County VA Trash & Recycling Guide
Cumberland County is a rural Piedmont county situated between Richmond and Farmville, south of Goochland and west of Amelia County. The county operates three citizen convenience centers for residential trash and recycling drop-off. The system is free for county residents, accepts a good range of materials, and requires a valid driver’s license as proof of residency.
Three Citizen Convenience Centers
Cumberland County’s Department of Public Works operates three convenience centers. To use any of them, you must show a valid driver’s license with a Cumberland County address — no exceptions. These facilities are for residential use only; commercial waste is not accepted.
For current addresses, hours, and a map of all three locations, visit cumberlandcounty.virginia.gov. Hours are subject to change.

What's Accepted
Cumberland County’s convenience centers accept a broader range of materials than many rural counties:
Household garbage (bagged)
Cardboard
Glass
Plastic
Aluminum and metal
Textiles (clothing, fabric)
Electronics and TVs
Paper
White goods / large appliances (non-compressor units accepted at all centers)
Cooking oil
Tires without rims — up to 5 tires per household per year
Vehicle batteries
What's NOT Accepted
A few common items that cannot go in the convenience center bins:
- Appliances containing compressors (refrigerators, freezers, AC units) — take to the Madison District Transfer Station only
- Wet paint — must be dried completely before disposal (kitty litter mixed into the paint works well; lid off until solid)
- Construction and demolition debris
- Hot ashes
- Dead animals
- Fluorescent bulbs and CFLs
- Furniture and mattresses — contact county for current guidance
- Propane gas cylinders
- Pallets
- Automotive/lead-acid batteries — take to auto parts retailers, not the convenience center
Tire Recycling Events
Cumberland County holds twice-yearly tire recycling events open to county residents. Unlike most counties where the limit is 5–10 tires, Cumberland’s events allow up to 100 tires per person — making them especially useful for farms, property managers, and anyone with a large tire stockpile. Passenger tires on or off rim are accepted. Contact the county Public Works department at (804) 492-9267 for event dates.
Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility
In July 2025, a new facility was approved for eastern Cumberland County — the Green Ridge Recycling and Disposal Facility, located off Route 60. Operated by GFL Environmental (formerly County Waste of Virginia), the facility is designed to accept up to 1,500 tons per day of Virginia-generated solid waste and will include a citizen convenience center. This is a significant development for waste infrastructure in the region. Visit cumberlandcounty.virginia.gov for updates on the facility’s timeline and opening.
No County Curbside
Cumberland County does not provide residential curbside pickup. Private haulers serve the county.
