Orange County VA Trash & Recycling Guide

Orange County sits in the Virginia Piedmont north of Lake Anna, bordered by Spotsylvania, Culpeper, Madison, and Greene counties. The county operates eight collection and recycling centers for residents, plus a landfill on Porter Road east of the town of Orange. Residential disposal at county facilities is free — no fees, no minimum charges.
One feature that sets Orange County apart from most of its rural neighbors: the Towns of Orange and Gordonsville both offer curbside collection for their residents. If you live within either town limit, you have a curbside option that most of rural Central Virginia doesn’t.

The One Thing Every Orange County Resident Needs to Know

All Orange County collection centers and the landfill are closed on Wednesdays. Every week, no exceptions. If Wednesday is your usual errand day, build your trash runs around another day. Showing up on a Wednesday means a wasted trip.

Eight Collection & Recycling Centers

Orange County maintains eight staffed collection and recycling centers throughout the county. All centers accept household trash. Recycling is available at some sites but not all — see the table below. Businesses and out-of-county residents may not use any county facility.

Recycling in Orange County

Orange County provides single-stream recycling boxes at five of its eight collection sites. Single-stream means no sorting — place all accepted recyclables together in one bin. The county is mandated by the state of Virginia to meet or exceed a 25% recycling rate on municipal solid waste.

Accepted Recyclables

  • Paper goods — magazines, newspapers, envelopes, office paper, paper grocery bags, paperback books
  • Flattened cardboard — cereal boxes, soda boxes, milk and juice cartons, egg cartons, shipping boxes
  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Aluminum and metal cans
  • Glass bottles and jars (at sites that accept glass)

Not Accepted in Single-Stream

  • Plastic bags — not recyclable in the single-stream bins
  • Plastic film and packaging wrap

For plastic bags and film, Orange County participates in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge, which provides a separate drop-off program. Check orangecountyva.gov for current NexTrex drop-off locations.

Town of Orange — Curbside Collection

The Town of Orange provides curbside refuse collection for town residents. Trash must be placed at the edge of the curb — no earlier than 7 p.m. the evening before collection day and no later than 7 a.m. on collection day. Town employees do not enter private property. Appliances and large metal items are only collected during regularly scheduled Clean-Up Weeks.

For your pickup schedule, collection rules, and Clean-Up Week dates: call (540) 672-4791 or visit townoforangeva.gov.

Town of Gordonsville — Curbside Collection

The Town of Gordonsville provides curbside trash collection for its residents. For pickup schedule details and rules, contact the town at (540) 832-2233.

Household Hazardous Waste

Orange County holds annual hazardous waste collection events as part of its Litter Control Events program. Events are free for county residents and typically accept motor oil, car batteries, leftover paint, pesticides, household chemicals, and fluorescent bulbs. Dates and locations are posted to the county’s events calendar at orangecountyva.gov.

Holiday Schedule

The Orange County landfill and collection centers do not follow the same holiday schedule as county government offices — they have their own calendar. In addition to the standard Wednesday closure, the landfill and centers are closed on certain holidays throughout the year. The current holiday closure list is posted at orangecountyva.gov/760/Holiday-Schedule. Always check before making a special trip on or near a holiday.

Rural Orange County — No County Curbside

Outside the towns of Orange and Gordonsville, Orange County does not provide residential curbside trash collection. Rural county residents use the collection center system or hire a private hauler. With eight centers spread across the county and extended evening hours at most sites, the self-haul system is reasonably accessible for most residents.
